Originally repurposed from an East Vancouver heritage church, The Cultch’s beloved community theatre was renovated to modern theatre standards in 2010, garnering a Heritage B.C. Award of Honour in the process. Working within the small, footprint of the existing 290-seat historic theatre, the venue’s lighting, audio, and video systems were completely upgraded, and a new motorized rigging systems was added. The historic theatre’s original balcony seating, including its iconic railing, was reworked to improve audience circulation, meet modern safety and production requirements, and keep noise from the busy streets from entering the theatre. A new building to house administration offices, an 80-seat studio theatre, and supporting services areas for both theatres were built on the existing parking lot.
